“Of course not,” said Cheney,
“But take a look to be thorough, and just out of curiosity.”
I
believe that the younger Bush asked Powell to be his running mate. Rather than
having what would have been Powell’s refusal, under this scenario, getting out,
Bush then asked Cheney.
Ruling out controversy would not have been an issue
at the Republican Party national convention. A little controversy may have been
good for the ticket, anyway.
In 1948, the Democratic Party had three
presidential candidates, including FDR’s former vice president and the man with
the most seniority in the United States Senate today. Truman still beat Dewey,
even though he was denied New York’s electoral votes because of the candidacy
of that former vic president. And Truman was denied the electoral votes of some
states in the Deep South simultaneously.
When the United States invaded
Panama, Cheney asked Powell, “How many men are there in a platoon?”
Cheney wanted to bomb the air bases in Manila during an attempted coup against
Philippine President Corazon Aquino. But Powell suggested that the U.S. fighter
jets buzz the populace, instead.
Cheney rose to Republican Party Minority
Whip during his 10 years as Wyoming’s only representative in the House. He
voted 100 percent of the time against abortion rights.
Cheney is being
presented as a portly gentlemen who adds gravitas to the Republican ticket.
Looks like more white bread to me.
