LIHU’E — Everybody knows reading is fundamental and fun.
But next month,
reading can also be profitable.
The Lihu’e Public Library is sponsoring an
adult reading program for the month of August. To participate, a library patron
must read at least six books during the month. The books must be adult fiction
or non-fiction, and may come from the library’s Hawaiian collection and foreign
books.
Beware: Magazines don’t count toward the total.
In addition to
reading the six books, participants must write a short synopsis of the book on
the front of an index card (provided by the library), including an evaluation
of “thumbs up” or “thumbs down.”
The reader must also enter his or her name
and address and phone number on the back of the index card. The card then
becomes an entry form for a Sept. 1 prize drawing and can be deposited in a box
at the circulation desk. The more you read, the better your chance to win the
first, second and third-place prizes —gift certificates of $50 from Duke’s
and $30 and $20 from Border’s Books.
“We would like to get more people
reading and using their local library,” said Carol White, the Lihue
librarian.
White has worked at the library for six years. A native of the
Big Island, her interest in libraries began when she worked as an emergency
hire at a library on the Big Island and liked it. Prior to becoming a
librarian, White had her own business. She said next month’s adult reading
program contest is a first in Lihu’e.
