KYBA boys 14U in playoffs; girls continue seeding play

KALAHEO—Kaua`i Youth Basketball Association 14 & Under teams in boys and

girls took to the floor of the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center under different

circumstances Saturday as the boys started their playoffs while the girls

continued their league play to determine seedings for the playoffs.

Despite

outscoring the Puhi Wildcats 13-10 in the first frame, and 11-10 in the final

stanza, the Kapa`a King Cobras succumbed to top seed Puhi Wildcats 48-43

behind double digit scoring from Puhi’s Keala Watson who ended the game at 16

points with Aren Racca sinking 14 markers.

Brandon Ballesteros topped the

Cobras scoring roster with 13 points followed by Adrian Agaran with 7

points.

Fourth seeded Westside Hornets defeated the fifth seed Lihu`e

Wolfpack in the day’s second playoff game behind Luke Tsuchiya’s 24 points with

Jordan Shea sinking 6 points.

Justin Kashiwabara, coming in with 6 of

Lihu`e’s 8-point second quarter where the Wolfpack outgunned the Hornets 8-4,

topped the Lihu`e scoring with 8 points followed by Darren Shimanuki who ended

with 7 points.

Ashley Mier paced the Girls 14U Kaumakani Supersonics to a

31-18 win over the Hanapepe RefuGs in the first of two girls’ games played.

Meir ended the day with 11 points followed by Jenalyn Andres with 8

points.

Chasen Sherman, the former 12U player, topped the Hanapepe scoring

with 6 points including a first quarter trey that saw Hanapepe outshoot

Kaumakani 8-4, and three points coming in the second quarter. Brandee Abuan,

another upgraded 12U RefuG, added 4 points.

Ashley Belisario and Nadia

Badua each tucked away 7 points to pace the (Pua Loke) Lihu`e squad to a 30-24

showing over the Puhi Wildcats with Mariko Strickland aiding the cause with a

6-point contribution.

Badua and Strickland paced the Pua Loke scoring

explosion in the fourth quarter as the pair combined for 10 of the squad’s 15

point total.

Starlene Kelekoma, scoring four of the Wildcats’ 6-point first

quarter where Puhi outshot Lihu`e 6-2, had 10 points to lead the Wildcats with

Valerie Aficial adding 4 points.
