KAPA`A— Frank Bukoski smacked a 3-run homer in the first inning to ignite West
Kaua`i to a 4-run frame that kept burning to a 14-6 win over the undefeated
(second round) Rookies in the finale of a doubleheader played at the New Kapa`a
Ball Park.
In an effort to curb the Bukoski stick, the Rookies walked the
potentially dangerous hitter three times during the game.
Bukoski also
handled pitching duties for West Kaua`i, going the distance on the mound for
the win with the Rookies’ Archie Fontanilla suffering the loss.
Big bats
for West Kaua`i included Danny Manus with a 3-run homer on two hits, Bobby Rita
also chalking up a 3-run homer, and Joe Silva going 3-for-3.
Mike Floster
and Brudda Rittmiester paired hits in the win.
Nelly Mendonca smashed two
home runs on three hits for the Rookies, and Fontanilla was 3-for-3 in the
loss.
In an earlier encounter, East Kaua`i bombed The K-Makules 23-4 behind
the pitching of Ronnie Holt who pitched the entire game for the win.
Holt
was also 2-for-2 behind the plate.
Jay Acoba, the losing pitcher for
K-Makules, was jolted in the loss as East Kaua`i’s Ray Sam Fong came up with a
grand slam in his 4-for-4 outing.
Ed Bales and East Kaua`i player/coach Les
Kubo also chalked up 4-for-4 performances. Alex Youn rounded out the East
Kaua`i hitting leaders with a 3-run homer on 2 hits.
Tada Hashimoto,
batting 3-for-3, and Ernie Domingo’s two hits accounted for the K-Makules’
hitting.
The West Kaua`i win over the Rookies brings the second round lead
to a tie with each team posting 5-1 standings.
The Lihu`e A’s follow at
3-2, East Kaua`i 3-3, K-Makules 1-5, and Kawaihau 0-5.
Saturday’s games
move to the Wailua Field with Kawaihau hosting East Kaua`i in the first game
followed by K-Makules taking on the Rookies. The Lihu`e A’s will take on West
Kaua`i in the third game, and the postponed Kawaihau/Lihu`e A’s game will be
played following the regulation third game.
