KALAHEO—Kapa`a High survived a pair of games on Tuesday night in order to meet
On Fire for the title of the county’s Kaua`i Open 17 & Under basketball
league, but the task was not any less formidable on Thursday night because
Kapa`a needed to win a double-header against On Fire to take home the
trophy.
Both teams charged out the gate, but when the dust had settled at
the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, Kapa`a High suffered the toll of playing a
pair of double-headers as On Fire managed to outlast the Warriors, 73-80, and
69-46 for the trophy.
Spectators were treated to an electrifying fast-paced
defensive slugfest with the Warriors being able to capitalize on lapses in On
Fire’s defensive posture to take a 46-37 first-game lead at the half with a
quick series of baskets just seconds before the buzzer behind the low posting
of Eric Robbins and Ed Roesler who combined for 20 of Kapa`a’s
score.
Lionel Tomacder was the go-to shooter for On Fire who tallied 10
points with Jason Sahara getting the crowd excited with his 6-point
contribution by weaving through heavy traffic from the right side.
Jeffrey
Gimenez owned the second half for the Kapa`a High squad as the forward chipped
out 13 of his game-high 20 points in the second half from a variety of court
positions.
Tomacder continued with an 11-point second half effort to lead
On Fire with 21 points at game’s end.
Landon Labrador took the helm for On
Fire in the title game as he paced the Billy Ramos team with five of the team’s
13 first-half field goals while holding Kapa`a to just 6 buckets to take a
32-22 halftime lead enroute to their 69-46 win for the title.
Kapa`a was
10-for-12 at the charity line in the first half against On Fire’s 3-for-6
showing in the same period.
Kapu Hendrickson exploded for 11 of his
game-total 17 points for Kapa`a, but the effort fell short at the buzzer as On
Fire answered with Mason Ceria stepping up with 14 of his game-ending 17 points
in the second half.
On Fire continued to outgun Kapa`a 15 field goals to
Kapa`a’s 9 in the second half.
On Fire’s Tomacder added 8 and RJ Pillos
contributed 5, including a trey, in the same period.
