HONOLULU—Both boys and girls titles in the Island Movers/Hawai`i High School
Athletic Association meet at Mililani High School were won and lost in the
final events of the meet, the 4×400-meter relays.
Kamehameha’s boys led
Punahou 37-36 going into the relay. With 10 points to the winner and 8 to
second place, both teams needed to finish first.
Punahou led by 15 yards
after two legs, but dropped the baton pass between No. 2 and No. 3. Kamehameha
sophomore Nainoa Spencer sped by and the Warriors went on to win the event and
the meet, 47-36.
Had Punahou won the relay, it would have won its fifth
straight and 27th overall title, 46-45.
Joining Spencer on the meet-winning
Kamehameha relay team were twins Michael and Landon Castellano and Travis Ah
King, all seniors.
Punahou’s girls got step-up performances from a number
of freshmen and sophomores to edge Vera Simms and Mililani 49-46.
Leading
41-36, the Buff n’ Blue needed to finish third in the final relay to win their
sixth straight title unless favored Mililani dropped the baton.
They
finished second.
Two meet records were set, both by girls. Triple winner
Simms broke the 110-meter high hurdles record she set in Thursday’s trials with
a time of 14.85 seconds in the first race of the meet.
Roosevelt’s Kim Higa
pole vaulted 11-feet on her final attempt to break the record set last year,
when the event was introduced for girls.
Punahou’s Victoria Chang won two
of the girls’ longest races, currently 1,500- and 3,000-meters, for the fourth
year in a row, but did not challenge the meet records she holds in both
events.
