I’m certainly disappointed by the Governor’s veto of S.B. 2001.
On the
other hand, I’m more determined than ever to do a better job of lobbying next
year and to get the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) to
want to help us with our drowning problem here on Kaua’i, certainly on the
beaches that the DLNR owns and oversees.
They are, in fact, our most
dangerous beaches.
We did a good job of getting the legislators in both
houses to want to help. Now we need to do a better job in the proverbial “back
room.”
In the meantime, our county—government and private sectors—must
and will continue to improve our in-house water safety effort, and to try to
reduce the number of drowning tragedies that occur here.
