LIHU’E — The Kusaka Administration Tuesday named five companies who will
compete for the county’s solid waste disposal contract.
Representatives of
the companies have been invited to present overviews of their technologies at
two public meetings to be held this month.
The finalists include a Kaua’i
sugar company, two Canadian companies, one from New York and one from
Georgia.
“We are very impressed at the quality of these proposals and look
forward to presenting this information to Kaua’i’s residents for feedback,”
said Mayor Maryanne Kusaka.
On Thursday, April 13, Seghers Better
Technology USA Inc., with headquarters in Austell, Georgia, and Gay &
Robinson, of Kaua’i, will present overviews of their proposals.
Monday,
April 17, Conporec/S&W Services of Cazenovia, N.Y., and two Ontario
companies, HUWS Canada and Canada Composting/Unitek Solvent Services, Ltd., are
scheduled to present their proposals.
At the public meetings,
representatives of the companies will give 45-minute overviews of their
proposals, but will not be required to divulge proprietary information.
They have been asked, according to the Mayor’s office, to provide background on
their company, their proposed waste management process, proposed site location,
address traffic and environmental impacts, and employment opportunities for
Kaua’i residents.
The public will be encouraged to submit written comments
and questions, and pertinent questions will be posed to the presenters before
the close of the evening, said Kusaka
The presentations will take place at
Kaua’i War Memorial Convention Hall with the April 13 meeting beginning at 6
p.m. and the April 17 meeting at 5 p.m.
Each company is expected to provide
a short synopsis of their proposed process so that it can be publicized prior
to the meetings.
“That information will be provided to the media as soon
as possible,” Kusaka said.
