HANAMA’ULU – Kaiola Canoe Club and FM 97 will again present the fun and
exciting Kaua’i Business Canoe Race on Sunday, April 16.
The races will be
held at Hanama’ulu Bay and teams sponsored by local businesses will paddle and
compete in less than 1/4 mile events. Events will start at 8 a.m.
The
purpose of this event is to promote friendly competition between members of the
Kaua’i business community and give people an opportunity to experience a great
state sport.
Each team will consist of five paddlers and one alternate.
Organizers will supply the canoe, paddles and a steersperson. Paddlers do
not have to work for the sponsoring business.
There will be three
categories: Men, Women and Mixed. Classifications are: Novice B, Novice A, Open
and a Mixed Open Master Crew (age 40 and over). Entry fee is $100 per crew
entered.
Novice B: Persons entered must have no prior paddling experience
other than in a business race. A crew entered in the B division cannot have
placed first in any business race.
Novice A: Persons entered in this
division must also have no prior paddling experience other than in a business
race but may use not more than two persons who have paddling experience not
currently involved with any canoe club.
Open: The open division is open to
experienced paddlers, including a steersperson. If a crew does not have one,
one will be provided.
Mixed crew: Crews entered in any of the mixed
categories must be made up of three wahines and two men or vice-versa. A
steersperson will be provided (kane/wahine) depending on the crew set-up.
Mixed master crew (age 40 and over): The same rules apply as mixed crew
but paddlers must be 40 or over. (Age verification will be needed if a
paddler’s age is questioned). This category is considered an open
event.
Trophies awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place crews will be given for
each category and individual awards for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd
placers.
Kaiola Canoe Club facilities will be available for use upon
request by appointment so practices don’t overlap.
Practices are limited
to three 30 to 45-minute sessions each to give everyone equal practice
time.
Entry forms and other information are available by paging 644-1061.
Deadline for entries is April 12 at noon to lock-in sponsoring business names
on shirts.
