— Wendall Nonaka pitched a complete game for the Hanapepe Rivermen as the
westside team successfully defended their Americans of Japanese Ancestry (AJA)
baseball title by subduing the Lihu’e Builders 12-2 in a game shortened by the
10-run rule.
Nonaka, in the win, allowed 2 runs and 8 hits.
He also
struck out 5 Lihu’e batters to end the season on a 4-win, 1-loss record.
Hanapepe bats came alive early as the Rivermen smacked 6 hits to drive 7
runs in the first two innings.
Davin Yamase had the longest stick with a
triple while scoring 4 runs followed by Nolan Albarado who connected for 2
doubles, a single, and had 4 RBI’s credited to his bat.
Wendall Nonaka
and Kelly Robinson had 2 runs on 2 hits each. Clifford Matsusaka notched 2
hits, and Scott Yamase was credited with a 2-run double in the game.
Barry
Kawamura suffered the loss for Lihue.
Blaine Tsukayama relieved Kawamura
in the second inning and went the distance allowing five runs on 5 hits while
striking out 5 batters and allowing one walk.
Tsukayama, Mikey Cardinez,
Ahren Kaneshiro, and Dan Tanimoto claimed hits for Lihue.
The Kalaheo
Kaneshiro Farms soared past the Makaweli Indians 13-6 to claim second place in
the AJA standings behind the pitching of Les Obatake who went the
distance.
Obatake finished the day allowing 6 runs on 13 hits, walking 3,
and striking out 3.
Liko Pereira, sticking a double and a triple while
driving in 4 runs, paced the Kalaheo bats with Kainoa Santos ending the day
with three hits and 2 RBI’s.
Jason Koga rounded out the leaders with 2
hits.
Justin Matsukawa, Mike Shimatsu, and Tyler Kobayashi each contributed
two hits for Makaweli with Lance Nakata credited with an RBI double.
Jason
Nakata, Matsukawa, and Joshua Maeda shared pitching duties for Makaweli with
Nakata suffering the loss conceding 5 runs on 7 hits while allowing 5 walks
with no strike-outs.
Season standings have Hanapepe (6-1-1) in first
followed by Kalaheo (5-2-1), Lihue (4-4-0), Makaweli (3-4-1), and the
newly-formed Kapa’a (0-7-1).
The Kaua’i AJA All-stars will be travelling to
the Hawai’i AJA State Tournament which will be held on Maui on April 8-9.
