handily downed the Menehunes 14-1 in the opener of the Saturday twinbill only
to see their chances for a possible win diminish in the sixth inning of the
nightcap as Waimea locked up a 3-2 squeaker.
Micah Furtado paced the
Warriors’ 14-1 win with a 3-run homer in the first inning of game one as Kapa’a
picked up 11 runs in the game shortened by the 10-run rule.
Royce Rapozo
picked up the win for Kapa’a in game one with Ashley Vidinha suffering the
loss.
Joshua Maeda was credited with the win for Waimea in game two. Allen
Mundon was tagged with the loss for Kapa’a.
Waimea travels to Vidinha
Stadium on Wednesday when the Kaua’i High School Red Raiders open their season
with the first pitch scheduled for 2:45 p.m.

– Waimea JV dominates
Kapa`a
Charise Ponce, Virginia Aguilar, and Ashlee Vea came up with ten
points apiece to pace the junior Waimea ladies to a 56-26 win over the visiting
Kapa’a JV squad at the Clem Gomes Gym here.
Teseily Maguire topped the
Warriors’ scoring with a ten-point effort with Kahea Lopez (7) and Tanya Tanic
(4) combining for an eleven-point contribution.
The Warriors draw a bye on
Friday, March 24 as the Menehunes travel to Kaua’i for an encounter with the JV
Red Raiders.
Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
– Raiders JV strong over
Waimea
Waimea’s Ashlee Vea topped all scorers with 17 points and got some
help from Lorraine Lagoc who chipped in 11 points, but the effort was not
enough to beat the Kaua’i JV squad who swept past the Junior Menehunes,
64-48.
Kelly Dennis and Belinda Butac moved the Junior Raiders with 11
points each with Sasha Sogi adding 9, and Kristalyn Kashiwabara and Tania
Racelo each scoring 8.
The Raiders (1-0) travel to Kapa`a (0-1) on Tuesday
with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
– Kiggins’ Hole In One
Ronald R.
Kiggins, 63, of Kapa’a carded his first hole-in-one at the first hole of the
Wailua Golf Course on March 2.
Using a “Chuck Steak House” (Titlest) ball,
Kiggins used a Project 1 #5 iron on the shot.
The “one bounce and in” feat
was witnessed by John Vogt, Wayne Soma, and Scott King.

Honored
University of Hawai’i head baseball coach Les Murakami will be
recognized in a ceremony prior to the UH Rainbow-Pepperdine Easter Tournament
game on March 29 at 6:15 p.m.
Murakami, who is in his 30th season directing
the University of Hawai`i baseball program, will be recognized for his recent
induction into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in the
class of 2000 at a January 7 ceremony in Chicago.
Don Robbs will emcee the
event on the field with presentations coming from UH Athletics Director Hugh
Yoshida and Hui Kokua Kinipopo (UH baseball booster club) president Richard
Sato.
Murakami is the first baseball coach in the state of Hawai`i to be
inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame.
