District spelling bee champs

Kaua’i High & Intermediate School students Mia Shiraishi (l) and Shelcie

Takenouchi (r) will be representing the Kaua’i schools district at the state

spelling bee on O’ahu April 1. Shirashi topped the field of 12 spellers from

three public schools and three private schools by correctly spelling

“pitchblende,” followed by “hypotactic” after Takenouchi stumbled on “gynarchy”

in the 13th round at the King Kaumuali’i School cafeteria. (Photo by
