Sports to Ponder
In Wednesday’s column, we offered you sports tid-bits from here, there and
everywhere, and set up sort of like a “click-on-the-square” internet page. Why
not do it again?
– Alex Naumu, a Kaua’i basketball and soccer coach,
has a cast of high-grade athletes as offspring. Son Nikko Naumu was a key
player for the Waimea High School basketball team this winter. Nikko’s older
brother Nouveau Naumu is a starting point guard for the Kamehameha Warriors
on O’ahu. Their sister Napua Naumu — a freshman — is in the middle of tryouts
for the Kamehameha girls varsity team.
– There are superstars and then
there are legends. Jerry Rice fits into the legends category, and he’s coming
to Kaua’i for a benefit softball game in April (see related story). They’re
bringing in June Jones too, so you can probably count on a packed house. Other
big-name players will be coming as well.
– Yes! Dennis Rodman is
taking on Big Brother. David Stern is sort of the NBA dictator, and it’s
refreshing to see someone speak up, even if it’s a cry-baby like Rodman. It’s
not sports anymore folks, it’s sport-fo-tainment or whatever you want to call
it. And don’t expect this kind of thing to slow down anytime soon. Expect more
and more of this kind of “entertainment” to creep into pro sports. Watch. The
conservative approach to sports marketing is history. The signs are already
here: the WWF-backed XFL is coming. The X Games are huge. Jesse Ventura is a
Governor!
– Tyler Yates is in town. The big, burly pitcher — who went
from Koloa youth baseball to Kaua’i High School to the University of
Hawai’i-Hilo to the Oakland Athletics’ organization — will go to spring
training in March. Two years ago, he played for the Rookie League and for South
Oregon in Single-A. Last year, he played for the Single-A Visalia Oaks and
fanned 74 batters in 82 innings while being clocked regularly with a 92-93 mph
fastball.
– Sean Jardin, the former Waimea High School standout
athlete, was playing regularly for the Linfield College football team this fall
until he went down with an injury.
– It should be another interesting
baseball season in the Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation. Kaua’i High has won
the title five years in a row and they’ve got a veteran cast back again, but
Kapa’a has plenty of talent back too and they came inches away from beating the
Red Raiders in the title game a year ago. And you can’t count out Waimea. For
the past few years, they’ve had a solid, young team that was a player or two
away from making a serious run at the title.
– Go Prada! They’re
Italianos.
