HANAPEPE – The Kapa’a Warriors passed an important KIF boys soccer test last
Saturday.
The Warriors, locked in a three-way battle for first place, beat
the Waimea Menehunes by a convincing 4-1 score at Hanapepe Stadium.
The win
lifted the Warriors to 4-2-1 on the season, just one game behind the
front-running Kaua’i Red Raiders. The Red Raiders are 5-1-1.
The Menehunes
lost a little bit of steam, dropping to 3-2-2, but they’re still mathematically
alive for championship honors.
All three contenders have just two games to
go.
One key matchup will be held this weekend — Kaua’i vs. Waimea on
Saturday at 2:15 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium.
The Kapa’a vs. Kaua”i season
finale will most likely decide the championship. That game is scheduled for
Saturday, Feb. 5 at 5:45 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium.
In girls varsity play,
the Kapa’a Warriors survived a scare from the upstart Waimea Menehunes by
recording a slim 4-3 victory to clinch another KIF title
There were four
other games last Saturday — two in the varsity ranks and two in junior
varsity.
Results of all six games follow.
Varsity Boys
Kapa’a 4,
Waimea 1
Tyson Rabago, Kalau Ornellas, Colby Ayonon and Kainoa Nakazawa
were the Kapa’a goal scorers in the intensely played game.
Jamieson Cosier
found the net for the Menehunes.
Kaua’i 12, Island/Kula 0
Ten different
players scored for the Red Raiders — Ikaika Hornstine and Mason Chan with two
goals each, and Cole Brandeburg, Andy Oda, Louis Abrams, Landon Labrador, Sean
Moura, Sean Kosen, Ryan Rolland and Jon Ching with one each.
Brandeburg
also helped out with three assists, while Oda chipped in with an
assist.
Island/Kula Wolf-Pac head coach Sean Magoun was pleased that his
team is getting “more competitive” and “played more aggressively.”
“Kaua’i
High demonstrated better fundamentals and execution of the game,” Magoun
said.
Varsity Girls
Kapa’a 4, Waimea 3
Jasmine Stevenson lit up the
Warriors’ offensive day with three goals, while Maja Marti added one.
The
Warriors will be heading to the state tournament on O’ahu in
mid-February.
Liane Sakai, Mia Moriguchi and Laurese Rosare delivered the
Waimea goals.
Ashley Hori, Charis Castillo provided strong defense for
Waimea and they also worked in creating opportunities. Jillian Queza, Tracie
Hayashi, Neki Maruyama, Taryn Dizon, Rosanna Estes and goalie Tina Moreno also
turned in strong defensive games.
“I’m very proud of this team,” said
Waimea coach Dan Agan. “No one quit.”
Kaua’i 11, Island/Kula 0
Jennie
Waiwaiole scored twice for the Red Raider girls, while Tiana Lum-Tucker, Elise
Martin, Brooke Dela Cruz, Rochelle Cup Choy, Keavy Brennan, Carmel Legacy,
Jasmine Barber, Hilary Cox and Chrissy Hayduk notched one goal each.
“Our
girls show incredible determination and grit, and are improving steady with
each game,” said Island/Kula’s Magoun who doubles as the boys and girls
coach.
Magoun says the loss of goalie Lohaki Kakalia to a foot sprain has
made the going even rougher.
Junior Varsity Boys
Kapa’a 3, Waimea
Danny Rittmeister fired in two goals and Brad Wakuta scored
one.
Keala Swain, who showed some dazzling midfield play, had an assist on
one of Rittmeister’s goals.
Jud McRoberts assisted on Wakuta’s goal by
slicing through the WHS defense.
Other big Kapa’a contributors were Isaiah
Sarsona, Ty Yamaguchi, Randy Lawrence, Christian Marston and Elliott
Byfield.
“Waimea has improved a lot since we last played them,” said Kapa’a
coach Neil MacDonald. “Their goalkeeper was outstanding and their defense was
exceptional.”
Junior Varsity Girls
Kapa’a 5, Waimea 0
Danielle Hill
scored two goals and Alisha Abalos, Sarah Agudong and LaRisa Nebre scored one
each for Kapa’a.
Deidra Spencer chipped in with an assist.
Waimea got
strong games from Carly Ibara, Taryn Honma, Ashlee Vea, Heather Prinzing, Keiki
Dela Cruz, Charise Ponce and Heather Medina.
