Members of Kapa’a Jodo Mission pound rice with hau mallets (above) to make
mochi, the New Year’s delicacy enjoyed throughout the islands. After cooking,
the rice is put into a motorized mochi maker (see page 2). Then the rice cakes
are laid out to cure on tables (r.). The Jodo Mission used about 1,000 pounds
of rice for its mochi, which will be sold to the public.
