LIHU’E – There are two undefeated teams in Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation varsity soccer as the holiday break arrives. The Kaua’i Red Raider boys moved to 4-0 with a 15-1 victory over the Island/Kula Schools Wolf-Pac on Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.

The Kaua’i Red Raider boys
moved to 4-0 with a 15-1 victory over the Island/Kula Schools Wolf-Pac on
Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
The Kapa’a High School Warrior girls also kept
their momentum going and hit the 4-0 mark by trimming the Waimea Menehunes
5-1.
In a key boys varsity game, the Kapa’a Warriors and Waimea Menehunes
played to a 1-1 tie.
There were three other KIF games on the day, including
two junior varsity contests.
Boys Varsity
Kaua’i 15, Island/Kula

Ryan Shiba, Cole Brandeburg and Andy Oda provided the offensive
leadership for the Red Raiders.
Shiba scored three goals and added two
assists, while Brandeburg helped out with two goals and four assists. Oda added
a pair of goals and a pair of assists.
Others contributing to the Kaua’i
offense were Tate Takahashi and Mason Chan with two goals each, Kesson
Yamamoto, Sean Kosen, Komoto and Louis Abrams Jr. with one goal each.
Kyle
Kagimoto and Landon Labrador were also key ingredients in the
victory.
Daniel Mettaeuer scored the Wolf-Pac’s goal.
Island/Kula is
0-4.
“The boys played good soccer, but Kaua’i High is so fast and good, and
that overshadowed our improvement,” said Island/Kula School head coach Sean
Magoun.
Waimea 1, Kapa’a 1
Waimea’s Desmond Rodrigues and Kapa’a’s
Colby Ayonon were the goal scorers in the intense tie.
The Menehunes
(2-1-1) maintained its second place position in the tie.
Kapa’a is
1-2-1.
Girls Varsity
Kapa’a 5, Waimea 1
Veterans Ingrid Nakamura
and Mytra DiLeonardo paced the Warrior girls with two goals each.
Kanoe
Arinaga blasted in the other Kapa’a goal.
“The team is working very hard,”
said Kapa’a coach Althea Arinaga. “They’ve been very loyal, coming to practices
which will continue through the Christmas vacation.
“Our goal is to for the
girls to work at a higher level of play, to be on top of their skills, and to
keep in good condition,” she added.
Kailana Soto scored the only goal for
the Menehunes. Other standouts were Charis Castillo, Ashley Hori, Liane Saiki,
Tracie Hayashi, Laurese Rosare, Neki Maruyama, Ivie Fujimura, Cassie Olores and
goalie Telissa Agbulos.
“Our girls played a great soccer game,” said Waimea
coach Dan Agan. “We were tied going into the second half.”
Waimea is
1-3.
Kaua’i 11, Island/Kula 0
Carmel Legacy turned in a big offensive
performance with four goals for the Red Raiders.
Elise Martin and Brooke
Dela Cruz scored two goals apiece, and Tiana Lum-Tucker, Jennie Waiwaiole and
Kelsie Allianic all found the net for one goal.
Kristin Lofstedt and
Lum-Tucker were cataylysts in the Raiders’ offensive scheme.
According to
Kaua’i head coach Dennis Chan, the Wolf-Pac opponents “played a very inspired
defensive game, particularly in the second half.”
Kaua’i High is 3-1, just
one game behind first place Kapa’a in the standings.
Island/Kula is
0-4.
The Wolf-Pac was without goalie Lokahi Kakalia. Caria Nakasone and
Jhana Cooper shared the duties in goal.
Boys Junior Varsity
Kapa’a 9,
Waimea 0
Gabe Sarsona scored four goals and Tyler Wakuta added three goals
to power the Warrior onslaught.
Levi McGarland and Danny Rittmeister also
zipped home goals for Kapa’a.
Kainoa Nakazawa and Noah Kaaumoana
contributed with two assists each, and Cijay Tanigawa, Keala Swain had one
assist apiece.
Jud McRoberts, Isaiah Sarsona and goalie Ricky Rodrick also
turned in notable defensive performances in the Warrior win.
Rodrick earned
the shutout.
Eric Uribe, Cyrus Tumbaga, Riley Shirai and goalie Cutis
Kimura turned in outstanding defensive performances for the
Menehunes.
“Although we lost, the boys didn’t give up, played hard until
the final whistle, played clean and tried their best,” said Waimea head coach
Chico Lazaro.
Girls Junior Varsity
Kapa’a 2, Waimea 1
Jessica
Huttger scored both Kapa’a goals on penalty kicks in the slim win.
The win
allowed the Warrior girls to improve to 2-1, just a half-game behind Kaua’i
High (2-0) in the girls junior varsity standings.
Kelsie Albarado, on a
pass from Carly Ibara, scored for WHS.
“Ashlee Vea did an outstanding joob
as goalkeeper for the first time,” said Waimea head coach Galen
Kawakami.
He said Virginia Aguilar and Heather Prinzing also turned in
top-notch defensive games.
