Remants of the Van Loi, the fishing boat that struck the reef off Waipouli in April, were hauled out of the water this weekend by Sea Engineering Inc. of O’ahu. The marine construction and diving company was hired by Van Loi Corp. for the salvage job. Company divers prepared the debris for removal on Friday.
On Saturday a helicopter airlifted the debris to a vacant field by the Bull Shed Restaurant to be cut up and sold as scrap metal, said company vice president Patrick Ross. The company was expected to haul more than 50 tons on Saturday and Sunday, and to haul the engine and other heavier debris by tugboat in the future.
