Platoon Sgt. Luther Shiro Nakamura of Pennsylvania, son of Mrs. Sumiyo Nakamura of Wailua, spent a week with his mother on Kauai as part of his furlough. It was the first time he had been home in fourteen years, Sgt. Nakamura joined the Army in December 7, 1946 at the old recruiting office on Kuhio Highway in Lihue. Before coming to Kauai, he was stationed in Washington State at Fort Lewis. He is with the Signal Corps and will spend a year in Vietnam.
The Wailua career soldier has spent three years in Stuttgart, Germany. He is married and his wife, Konstanzia, is from Austria. They have four children, of which the oldest is 17.
Sgt. Nakamura’s title is Technical Maintenance Supervisor. He received his education in radio while with the Army and has steadily advanced in the Signal Corps.
“I find a 100% change in Kauai in fourteen years of absence”, he commented and added he was surprised to see the island advance in so many areas in such a short period, His family is in Pennsylvania in the Pocono Mountain area. Although he loves Kauai, and enjoys Pennsylvania, he would like to live with his family in Austria.
