Jobless benefits under all programs rose during October to $846,482 as compared with $697,628 paid in September and $1,063,425 paid in October of last year.
State Labor Director Robert K. Hasegawa said that layoffs of seasonal pineapple cannery workers were largely responsible for last month’s rise.
Initial unemployment insurance claims filed — which indicate spells of new unemployment — increased by 13 percent and totaled 2,222. The cannery layoffs and some reductions in hotels and related establishments following the end of the peak summer tourist season were responsible for the increase.
