LIHUE — Kauai High School swimmer Hayley Kaeo broke the minute mark to qualify for the state meet Saturday during the second Kauai Interscholastic Federation qualifying meet hosted by Waimea High School at the YMCA pool.

Kaeo, who finished the day qualifying for another individual event and being part of the Kauai High School girls relay teams that qualified for two events, was one of three individual swimmers making state qualifying swims.

The Red Raider sophomore touched the wall at 56.90 seconds in the 100 freestyle event.

Her other qualifying swims came in the 50 freestyle (25.53) where she finished first, just .46 second ahead of Kapaa’s Maddie Hoesel, who also qualified for states with her second finish.

Kaeo also anchored the Red Raider girls 200 yard medley (2:04.30), and the girls 400 yard freestyle (4:09.30) relay teams who made state swims.

Julia Safford, swimming the second leg of the girls medley relay, picked up an individual qualifying swim in the 100 breaststroke where she touched the wall at 1:21.51.

The boys were limited to qualifying in relay events where Kapaa and Island School teams made the state cut with their first and second place finishes in the boys 400 yard freestyle relay event.

Island School will host the next KIF qualifying swim meet, Saturday starting at 10 a.m. at the YMCA pool.
