LIHUE — An 85-year-old man died Wednesday morning after being hit by a car while crossing Kaumualii Highway in Lawai.
A preliminary investigation found that the man, whose identity has not yet been released, was attempting to cross the highway shortly before 6 a.m., when he was struck by an eastbound Honda sedan in front of the Lawai 7-Eleven, according to a statement issued by the Kauai Police Department.
Police said responding medics found the man showing no vital signs. He was presumed dead at the scene.
The man was then transported to Wilcox Medical Center, where a doctor formally confirmed his death. An autopsy is pending.
The female driver of the sedan, 37, did not report any injuries, according to the police statement, which said “speed and alcohol/drugs do not appear to be factors in this collision,” although the investigation is still ongoing.
Police said the man was “apparently not walking in a marked crosswalk.”
Kaumualii Highway was closed in both directions for about three hours, while police officers with KPD’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation, diverting traffic through Koloa and Piko roads.
