LIHUE — The Kauai Gymnastics Academy mixes the magic of entertainment with the skill of gymnastics Sunday when the academy presents its 14th annual showcase in the newly nrenovated area of the Kukui Grove Center food court. The curtain rises at 1 p.m.
“What do you get when you mix talented gymnasts, Christmas, and a tall, green, furry curmudgeon?” said Jack Leonard, owner and coach for the Kauai Gymnastics Academy in Puhi. “The Grinch That Stole Christmas is something the gymnasts have been working on for the past several months, building on a theme suggested by KGA coach Mark Bonilla.”
Leonard said more than 30 gymnasts, set into three skill and age levels, will be tumbling, flipping, cartwheeling, and do a lot more on the Air4Tumble track that will be set up from the Puhi academy.
“For some of these gymnasts, this is the first time performing before an audience beyond the parents and friends at practice,” Leonard said. “What a better way to take a break from shopping.”
KGA athletes range in age from 7 to 15 years old and will be presented in three groups. The gymnasts will perform individual presentations showcasing their achievements in gymnastics.
The gymnasts put in two to six hours of work each week, depending on their levels.
Located in the Puhi Industrial Park, Kauai Gymnastics Academy is taking registrations for its winter session that starts Jan. 7.
“Give your feet a rest from shopping,” Leonard said. “Sit and enjoy the beauty and excitement of gymnastics. Who knows? You might get a visit from the Grinch.”
