WAILUA — The Kapaa High School girls soccer team ventured forth under its first-year coach Andrea Alfiler Friday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls soccer game against Kailua High School at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Sports Park.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Alfiler told her troop of greenshirts following its 2-0 loss at the hands of the Surfriders.
Kailua broke the 0-0 stalemate in the 38th minute when its midfielder fired a goal directly at the Kapaa goalkeeper from about 20 yards out. The keeper deflected the ball, but in the descent, the ball rolled into the folds to give Kailua a 1-0 bulge at the break.
Coming back in the 54th minute, the Surfriders upped the ante when the Kapaa defender fouled in the goalbox giving Kailua a penalty kick that went right off the keeper for its second score.
“We are lucky we could play two teams,” said Malu Afong, Kailua coach. “We understand two of the KIF teams are off-island at tournaments. We’re happy we could at least get in two games.”
The Surfriders get Saturday off before meeting the Voyagers at Island School starting at 10 a.m. Sunday.
