LIHUE — Cancer survivor Sandie Ishii wanted to do something to help the American Cancer Society raise funds to help support cancer programs, prevention initiatives and more.
“I wanted to do something this year to help, but also to keep the funds in the islands,” Ishii said.
That motivated her to enlist the help of Leslie Simmons and Brandon Allianic in organizing a Zumba glow party, at which Zumba enthusiasts will glow while dancing under black lights.
The trio got other Zumba instructors and leaders, including A Keone “Allan” Villaflor, Gloria Acain, Kawehi Anama, Kay Mones, Stacie Cantu, Joanie Morita, Gina Lee, Kimberly Miller Lenz, Ann Wooten, Jo Bantayao Johnson, Debbie Lankford, Janeen Harty, Anna Velasco and Brayden Santiago.
Together We Glow will be held Saturday at the Kauai Veterans Center, with dancing from 5 to 7 p.m. and prize drawings and giveaways from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.
“This will be a Zumba pink and purple glow party where we will be dancing under black lights and glowing,” Ishii said. “We encourage participants to wear bright-colored clothing, including pink in observance of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”
She added that the gathering is more than “just a Zumba dance party.”
There will be door prizes, vendor stations offering workout clothing, baked goods and food for sale. A silent auction will feature items like gift certificates from Harley’s, Pizza Hut and Monico’s, facials from Bella Dia, lash extensions from The Lash Lounge Kauai, haircuts and products from Studio 203, Style FX and Epic Hair, manicures from Studio 203, clothing from Lularoe and Coco Love, massages from Lomi Healing and Lua Lomi Massage, and a grand prize of an ocean-view room at the Kauai Marriott Resort &Beach Club.
“We’re still accepting contributions from the community,” Ishii said. “People wishing to donate can call me at 652-1647.”
With that lineup of offerings, the event is not limited to just Zumba enthusiasts. The public is invited to browse and shop at the various vendor offerings and bid on items in the silent auction before sitting back to watch the Zumba dancers glow.
Tickets are $15 at the door with proceeds benefiting ACS.
