KALAHEO — Waimea High School marksman Kaela Tsuchiya was lamenting coming up one point short following the Menehune’s Kauai Interscholastic Federation air riflery match against the Island School Voyagers on Wednesday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
“I finished with 254 points (95 prone, 76 standing, 83 kneeling),” the Menehune sighed to her grandparents and fellow Menehune. “One point more, and I would have made Expert (classification). Expert starts at 255 points.”
Tsuchiya’s performance netted her high-point for the day at Kalaheo Neighborhood Center where the match scheduled to start was pushed up. Meanwhile, over at the Kauai High School gym where the Red Raiders were hosting Kapaa High School in its Senior Match, the match was pushed back from its scheduled 3 p.m. start because the facilities were not ready at the start time.
Tsuchiya’s score also topped the Menehune wahine who took a 1,234 to 1,027 win over the Voyager girls who were led by Bonnie Lee finishing with 233 (89-55-89) points.
On the boys’ range, Island School’s Ka‘ohu Ranis led the Voyager men with 243 (90-73-80) points in hopes of repeating its victory from last week for the team’s first win of the season.
But Ranis was outscored by Waimea’s Shannon Caoagdan (93-69-89-251), and Bergan Ceballos (86-68-88-242) who led the Menehune to an 1,187 to 1,133 point victory.
Over at the Kauai High School gym, the Kauai High School boys took its match against Kapaa, 1,244 points to Kapaa’s 1,161 points, and the Kapaa girls were 54 points better than the Kauai girls, 1,254-1,238 points.
William Andres led the Raider boys’ win with 262 (96-80-86) points while Kiara Dolino topped the Kapaa girls’ performance with 258 (91-81-86) points, five points below the 263 (90-89-84) points collected by Kauai’s top girls marksman.
The next KIF air rifle matches will fire off at 3 p.m. when the Menehune travel to the Kapaa High School range and Island School hosts Kauai High School for the final round of the season.
There is a shoot off scheduled for Oct. 4, if necessary. Qualifiers from the Kauai Interscholastic Federation, including the girls team, boys team, and individual girl and boy qualifiers will advance to the 2018 Civilian Marksmanship Program Hawaii High School Athletic Association Air Riflery Championships that will be held on Oct. 23 at the Blaidell Exhibition Hall on Oahu.
