HONOLULU — A report shows that the Hawaii Department of Education’s fraud and ethics hotline has received more than 500 tips since 2016, resulting in one termination case.
Hawaii News Now reports that a review prepared for the state education board indicates that 222 of the tips led to formal reviews with 59 claims found substantiated.
According to the report, the majority of the 59 substantiated cases involved human resources issues, but others included misuse of department resources, fiscal impropriety and falsification of records.
A substantiated case from the last fiscal year resulted in an employee firing. Among the other cases, one resulted in a suspension and two led to employees resigning. Six written warnings and 17 verbal warnings were also issued from the cases.

Big deal, only the small (manini) personnel are punished, but the real problem lies with the upper management. For instance the principle of Waipahu High School who approved his own son’s company to replace a perfectly functioning bell system with a propriety based CISCO system that can only be attached to CISO certified equipment was installed, costing taxpayers $millions.
He was never punished but made to retire collecting his full pension and other benefits, while his son never got punished even though the CISCO alarm system never worked.
That’s the problem with the DOE, executive personnel retire as soon as they approve projects, then come back as contractors working on the project they approved, double dipping at taxpayer’s expense. They should be made to forfeit any pension if caught and fired on the spot
