Hawaii News Now TV news anchor Keahi Tucker, the water safety conference keynote speaker, gets a photo with Kalani Vierra of the Kauai Fire Department Ocean Safety Bureau at the ocean safety demonstration, where OSB’s Eugene Ancheta, background right, keeps an eye on youth activity developments on Kalapaki Beach.

Duane DeSoto congratulates a returning surfer on a good run while Kauai Fire Department Ocean Safety Bureau training Capt. Cleve Zarbaugh, left, keeps an eye on an even younger participant during the ocean safety demonstrations at the water safety conference at Kalapaki Beach.

Chris Kauwe passes out paddles to young people learning about canoes during the ocean safety demonstrations at the water safety conference at Kalapaki Beach.

Krystl Apeles said she and Kalani Vierra are still world champions despite finishing No. 2 at the tandem surfing competition in France. Kristyl (she had to do hula so couldn’t do a foil surfing demo with Kalani at the Hawaii Beach Safety Week Water Safety Conference) was on hand Friday afternoon to help keiki with safe surfing with Cleve Zarbaugh and Duane DeSoto and other water safety officers at the ocean safety demonstrations.

The gathering with fourth-grade students attracted a lot of attention along the Kalapaki Beach walk fronting the Kauai Marriott Resort &Beach Club, and Keahi Tucker, Kauai native and Honolulu Hawaii News Now TV news anchorman, one of the speakers at the two-day conference, took time out to check out the action, where Hilda “Tiki” Morales of Tiki Tacos (she’ll be participating in the Celebrity Chef Cookoff at the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair, too!) had her daughter (remember her as a baby when Tiki Tacos got started in Kealia?) participating.

Kudos to Kalani and the Kauai Fire Department and its Ocean Safety Bureau on setting up this year’s event, where David Duncan dropped in to check out the happenings before meeting up with his Friendship Force group from New Zealand. How about the Hero (water wear) inflatable rash guard?

OK, time to go check out the Parking Lot Paina to see how creative the food truck people are with Kauai Nectar Co. honey!
