LIHUE — In an effort to combat a recent rash of thefts and attempted unauthorized access into the Wainiha-Haena area, the County of Kauai will begin exchanging placards issued to residents (blue placards) and non-governmental agencies (white placards) beginning Wednesday.
County staff will install window decals in exchange for the issued placards, indicating the vehicle has authorized access to pass the Waikoko checkpoint, provided the placard matches the vehicle. Exchanges do not require any new paperwork or any additional forms to be filled out.
From Aug. 1 to 10, county staff will be posted at various locations to exchange placards, including vehicles in line on Kuhio Highway waiting for convoy start times.
All residential and non-governmental agency placards will expire after Aug. 31. Until that date, both the new decals and original placards will be honored by checkpoint staff during the transition.
