Hundreds of families got a head start on back to school by sharing in more than $18,000 in free school supplies distributed during the Back to School Bash at Kukui Grove Center.

Numerous community sponsors pooled their resources to help fund the load of supplies and collected to help with the distribution that took place under the canopy of a collection of keiki and youth resources, health geared toward active and fun lifestyles, and enhanced with special back-to-school offerings from the mall’s tenants.

Pau Hana Ts and the Bandwagon opened their doors for the first time, and Deja Vu Surf Hawaii enhanced their offerings with special guests like Clint Moncata, who represented Volcom and came in from Honolulu, and local artist Trysen Kaneshige, who did a custom air brush on select purchases.

The state Department of Education’s first day of school is Aug. 7 for many of its schools. Teachers return to classrooms, Aug. 1.
