Representatives from the many sponsors get a look at the more than 1,700 bags of school supplies they packed Wednesday in preparation for the Back to School Bash free school supplies giveaway that takes place Saturday morning at Kukui Grove Center.

Melissa McFerrin-Warrack was elated to see the throng of volunteers who turned out Wednesday to help pack school supplies at the mall.

“It’s such a good feeling to see this many people coming out to help kids,” said the events coordinator at Kukui Grove Center. “There was a need, and the community answered, big time.”

Nearly a hundred people formed an assembly line and packed more than 1,700 bags of school supplies for the Fourth annual Back to School Bash on Saturday at Kukui Grove Center.

“This is summer so we’re able to do this,” said Barbara Bloemke, a teacher from Elsie Wilcox Elementary School.

Other volunteers came from the Kauai High School student government, and represented sponsoring organizations.

“We are so grateful for the Kauai High School students who came out in force to help,” McFerrin-Warrack said.

The Back to School Bash is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students need to be present to get a free bag of school supplies.

It’s a full day of entertainment, prizes, health fair and sales. New for this year is a grand prize drawing for three nights at the Kauai Marriott Resort.

Are we teaching our young people that it is OK to consume a sea of yellow bags, which will eventually end up NOT biodegrading in our limited landfill? Would t not be wiser to use kraft bags like the ones mandated for use by grocery stores and the likes of Home Depot?
