Intersection needs safety improvements
I couldn’t agree more with Howard Tolby’s letter in Monday’s TGI about the danger lurking at the intersection of Kaumualii Highway and southbound Maluhia Road.
Gawking tourists, tired locals and thrill seekers instill dread in me every time that I approach this intersection, when I travel to Lihue from Waimea.

Feds can’t help us; Campagna can
We now see that we cannot depend on the Supreme Court to protect us from bad government policies like the president’s travel ban. Justice Sotomayor said that our country deserves a Judiciary that does not allow the government to “defy our most sacred legal commitments.” The court’s ruling occurred in the midst of public outcry against the separation of of children from their families at the southern border.
So we must turn to Congress to stand up for our most sacred legal commitments, like the right to due process for immigrants. The government says they have 2,047 children they are holding in custody, and will not say if they are continuing to receive separated children. What is happening is not normal, it is cruel, and it’s why citizens are taking to the streets to protest again, organized by Families Belong Together.
The Congress we have has not proven itself capable of protecting the people. Instead, it attacks our access to health care, enriches the wealthy with tax cuts, which is driving our national debt toward levels unseen since World War II, and constantly threatens our Social Security and Medicare benefits in order to pay for those tax cuts.
In the coming primary election, it is our responsibility, as citizens who care about each other, to carefully choose the candidates we support. In Congressional District 2, which covers Kauai, and stretches across all the Hawaiian Islands, we should choose Sherry Alu Campagna for Congress. The Hawaii State Teachers Association and the National Education Association endorsed Sherry precisely because of her long and passionate advocacy for social, economic and environmental justice. In Campagna’s own words, “This year’s races are more than political, they are for the survival of the democracy that we have always fought to maintain.”

So, when foreigners break our laws by coming across our borders illegally, we are supposedly not allowed to send them back, detain them together, or detain them separately. According to Cynthia, it is “our most sacred legal commitment” to allow foreigners to break our laws with impunity. This is anarchy that she is promoting. In the real world, anarchy leads to hardship, pain, and suffering. If the Democrats continue promote this anarchy, it is a clear recipe for more election failures.
I don’t mind it too much that the Democrats are committing political suicide by promoting anarchy. However, I think we would be much better served as a nation if we had two parties that were both somewhat reasonable and were vigorously competing for the best ideas.

Mark, This is todays lesson on govt. You dont understand socialism, naziism, fascism or communism either. I make this statement based on your previous comments. Just because a democrat backs a policy that you disagree with , you cannot use it as an example of promoting anarchy. Your knee jerk reaction and fear mongering are reflective of a closed mind.
Maybe you should put down your bible, which is a great book, and read other works.
Former promoter of christian based values, Mark Beeksma, is now an advocate for his new target of worship, the fat, orange, ranting baby-man and his reenactment of holocaust logistics such as the recent and current caging of a six year old boy, without his parents or knowledge of them or his future, with the number “46” strapped to his arm and chest. If the fat, orange, ranting baby-man started using cattle cars for deportation, we would get a justification comment from Mark about “the lawbreakers” deserving it! It’s not “sad,” it’s an abomination!
The Garden Island reported that Campagna is running because Tulsi supported Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton. Well, I guess you can count my vote to be against Campagna. If nothing else makes sense, this is yet another attack on a progressive candidate by the DNC establishment who rigged the last Presidential Election so that all the “Super Delegates” (including Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz) were committed to Clinton -BEFORE- the first primary was held! Hawaii went 70% for Sanders in the PPP, yet 8 of 10 Hawaii Super Delegates voted for Clinton. Tell me again how my vote counts.
Yep, vote for the sam-O, sam-O. Vote Campangna and see Nancy Pelosi screw up leadership of the House again. And moan as Chuck Schumer gives in “just one more time” to Mitch McConnell repeating his failure to get Merrick Garland appointed to the Supreme Court.
Tulsi Gabbard went to Syria to try to broker peace. She is upset that American Soldiers are dying in Syria. So am I!
Bush started the mess and Obama just spread it throughout the rest of the Middle East. Hillary Clinton even brought it to Central America and overthrew the Democratically elected (and progressive) government of Honduras. Now those Hondurans are fleeing the chaos Clinton created and trying to seek asylum in the USA. Gee, one might think that Clinton and Trump were working together.
Go ahead, vote for Campagna and then wonder why American Soldiers are getting killed in Niger. (What? you’ve never heard of Niger? I guess I made my point.)
Gee, looks like you left out any justification for Tulsi’s time in the Butler Cult. BTW, did that ever end? Nobody wants to talk about it over there in Progressive Fantasyland (PF)! They also don’t want to talk about her calling a friend of mine a “homosexual extremist supporter of Ed Case” some 10 years ago. No, we don’t bring these things up in the PF, we’d rather argue how a lap dance with Bashar al-Assad was so special, instead of one more sign of horrible judgement! Krishna, Krishna everyone!
You won’t find anyone working harder than our congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard on the serious issues that we are facing at home and as a nation. We need someone like her, well-versed in all areas of government especially foreign policy because it IS our endless involvement in regime change wars that is taking TRILLIONS of dollars that could be used here at home in healthcare, education, housing, infrastructure to name a few! She is introducing some of the most aggressive and progressive legislation in the #StopArmingTerroristsAct and #OFFAct that make me feel very hopeful for my children’s future. Sherry Campagna is simply unqualified to take on the wide range of issues facing congress today.
