Lihue bon dance this weekend
LIHUE — Rev. Kazunori Takahashi had no choice Saturday, rolling up his sleeves and overseeing the cleaning effort for the altar at the Lihue Hongwanji Mission in Kapaia.
“He has to come help us,” said Helen Yamaguchi, one of the church’s women club members. “He wants the church clean for the bon dance so he has to come work with us.”
The bon dance will take place Friday and Saturday at the Kauai Buddhist Council member church.
The group set up the bon dance ring, installed benches for spectators to the colorful, joyous occasion, and hammered the food booth structures into place for Takahashi’s final bon dance before he moves to Oahu for another Hongwanji assignment.
Dinner plate sales will start at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and dancing starts at 7:30 both nights.
There is no admission to take in the annual celebration.
