LIHUE — A bystander rescued a man in distress Monday at Kalapaki Beach.
A 56-year-old male visitor was swimming in waters off Kalapaki Beach when he became distressed, according to a county press release. A bystander noticed the man needing assistance and swam a rescue tube out to him.
“As he was being brought to shore, an ocean safety instructor and a retired lifeguard who were on the other side of the beach conduction the Junior Lifeguard Program, quickly ran over to assist,” the release said.
The man was conscious when brought to shore and did not need cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Firefighters and medics arrived on scene to further asses the man, but he declined further treatment.
