LIHUE — Kapaa High School graduate Kiyannie Sablay has lofty ambitions of changing health care.
“I’m going to the University of Nevada Las Vegas, where I’ll study health care administration and policies,” Sablay said. “There are a lot of rules in hospitals, and I want to affect changes in hospitals. I want to be in hospitals, but I don’t want to be a nurse. This way I can make a difference for all the people who work in health care.”
Sablay is one of three recipients of scholarships from the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, awarded during a luncheon hosted by the auxiliary for recipients and their families.
Brianne Hadama is the recipient from Kauai High School. “I’ll be studying nursing at the Kauai Community College,” Hadama said. “I worked previously as a dental assistant, and I like the hands-on work with patients. My mother is also a nurse here (at Wilcox Medical Center), and I want to continue to work here, helping people.”
Carla Mae Satumba, a recent graduate from Waimea High School, is the third recipient of an auxiliary scholarship of $500.
The Mahelona Hospital Auxiliary’s primary source of funds comes from the Mahelona Hospital Thrift Store that members operate in the hospital’s lobby.”
Claire Alfiler, Mahelona Hospital Auxiliary president, said they are pleased and honored to be able to support graduates of Kauai’s public schools.
