An islandwide beach cleanup is scheduled 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. People are wanted to help remove debris from Anahola, Pine Trees and Rock Quarry.
Sebastian “Seabass” Zietz, a professional surfer, and wife Krisy coordinated with the World Surf League Pure and the Surfrider Foundation on the project. They’re hoping for a huge turnout.
“There are a lot of things that need to be addressed on our beaches,” Krisy Zietz wrote. “Driftwood and debris are a huge concern as well as netting and plastic waste.”
The organizers will supply nonplastic and compostable supplies such as burlap bags and compostable gloves and trash bags. They are looking for volunteers who can move the heavier green waste as well as trucks for a dump run.
There is also a need for volunteers to clear the beach of plastic and unnatural waste deposited by the floods. The main site will be Pine Trees, where a raffle will held at day’s end. Proceeds will be donated to Surfrider.
Kristy Zietz said she and Sebastian were in Australia at the Margret River Pro surf event when the flooding occurred.
“We had to watch from social media until we were able to get home. It was awful,” she wrote.
They spend many days at Pine Trees where Sebastian surfs hours on end and has since he was a kid.
“We feel it is our responsibility to give back to our beaches and rid it of all of the trash that has been deposited there,” Kristy Zietz wrote. “We have to make it safe to surf again and getting rid of trash on the shore line is a step in the right direction.”
