KILAUEA — The Kalihiwai Bridge might not be in as much trouble as it seems from the photos that have circulated online since the rainstorms that flooded Kauai.
The photo shows erosion at the base of the bridge and has caused concern for those who cross it regularly, but representatives from the Hawaii Department of Transportation say it’s currently safe.
“The foundation for that bridge goes down another 100 feet below what is seen in the photograph that was circulated online,” said Tim Sakahara, spokesman for HDOT.
Inspections of all of the flood-affected bridges are underway and that includes Kalihiwai Bridge, as well as the Wailua Bridge, where debris is piling up against the base of the bridge.
“The work to remove all the debris on the Wailua Bridge continues overnight,” Sakahara said. “Our inspector and the structural bridge staff (were) at Kalihiwai Bridge (yesterday) to look at any long-term needs this bridge may have. The bridge is currently cleared for travel and it is safe to cross.”
Stay tuned to Twitter and Facebook pages for updates, Sakahara said.
