Saturday’s rain did not dampen the Waimea High School tennis teams who celebrated its Senior Day, or final home match, with victories of 5-0 for the boys, and 3-2 for the girls over Kapaa High School at the Menehune courts.
“This was Waimea’s last home match of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation tennis season,” said Waimea coach Cyrus Tumbaga. “It was a humid and overcast morning, and the Menehune men continued its win, picking up their fifth ‘W’ of this season. This is the first time they have accomplished winning all five boys matches — a feat they have been working hard to do all season.”
Limar Medina picked up his victory on the first singles court with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kapaa’s Jacobo Espi, and Edmelle Medina was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Kapaa’s Mason Buick on the second singles court.
Breicen Medina paired with Wendell Batangan for a 6-1, 6-1 win over Warriors Glenn Aguada and Kaimani Dryer on the first doubles court.
On the Boys second doubles concrete, Bryan Ingeniero teamed with Fred Ryl Adella to take a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kapaa’s Ian Sotelo and Chazer Agbayan. Tumbaga noted that during last week’s rain-delayed matches against Kauai High School at the Hokuala courts, Ryl Adella teamed with Wayne Noda to claim the second doubles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Red Raiders Thaine Ochoco and Thomas Better.
Noda was on the court, Saturday with Christian Pablo to take a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kapaa’s Skyler Wilson and AJ Glovasa on the third doubles arena.
Tumbaga said the Waimea wahine also picked up a 3-2 edge over Kapaa, the determining match coming on the Girls Second Singles court to break the 2-2 stalemate after four matches.
Leslie Uri battled Kapaa’s Danica Gibson for a 7-5 advantage in the first set before claiming a 6-4 win to give the Menehune the victory on home court.
Earlier, Kari Correa dominated the First Singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sydney Nice, and the Menehune duo of Micah Guillermo and Kristine Ruiz worked through a tie-breaker, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5 tie break) over Kapaa’s Wailana Makepa and MJ Uribe on the first doubles floor.
Girls second doubles belonged to Kapaa when the pair of Leila Nelson and Hannah Collins-Doijode were 6-0, 6-0 winners over Menehune Julienne Gawaran and Monique Joy Lorenzo. Kapaa claimed its second victory on the third doubles court when the duo of Analani Bacon and Ruby Jane Udaundo defeated the Waimea pair of Carla Mae Satumba and Louisa Tanigawa, 6-3, 6-3.
In addition to the tennis matches, the Menehune celebrated its 10 graduating seniors — four boys, and six girls — with festivities on the concrete. Limar Medina, Edmelle Medina, Ingeniero, and Joshua Ochua earned the boys honor, and on the girls’ courts, graduating seniors included Kari-Makenna Correa, Ayline Bravo, Guillermo, Ruiz, Lorenzo, and Carla Mae Satumba.
The day’s second series of matches, Kauai High School visiting Island School at the Kauai Community College tennis courts, was rained out and re-scheduled to play Monday starting at 3:30 p.m.
Waimea next travels to the Kauai Community College tennis courts, Saturday to close the KIF tennis season by meeting the Island School Voyagers starting at 1 p.m.
