KIPU — Police and firefighters responded to a vehicle fire that occurred on Kaumuali Highway in Kipu Sunday night.
No injuries were reported.
According to police, a 22-year-old Kekaha man was heading east near Knudsen Gap shortly after 8 p.m., when his 2004 Mazda sedan began experiencing electrical problems.
The driver pulled to the side of the road, when his engine caught fire. He had no passengers and was able to exit his vehicle without injuries.
Police responded to the scene and immediately closed Kaumualii Highway in both directions. Lihue firefighters arrived shortly after and found the fire was beginning to spread to the adjoining brush along the highway.
Firefighters gained control of the blaze within a couple of minutes, and the fire was fully extinguished shortly after 8:30 p.m.
Kaumualii Highway was closed in both directions for roughly 30 minutes, while crews worked to extinguish the blaze.
