HONOLULU — Gov. David Ige issued an emergency proclamation for Kauai on Tuesday after heavy rains caused a series of landslides on the slopes next to Kuhio Highway near Haena and Wainiha.
“The sole purpose of this emergency proclamation is to protect the health, welfare, property and living conditions of residents and visitors in Haena and Wainiha,” Ige said. “We must do everything we can to prevent another landslide that could jeopardize the people of Kaua.”
The Hawaii Department of Transportation initiated the emergency proclamation specifically to expedite work to secure the slope and prevent future landslides.
The proclamation makes available state general funds to be used under the direction of the governor, for expeditious and efficient relief of hardship created by the heavy rains.
The first series of landslides happened on Feb. 23. The most recent landslide occurred on March 22 after a heavy downpour. The landslides blocked the highway, isolating the Haena and Wainiha communities in the Hanalei District.
