LIHUE — Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School teacher Kevin Matsunaga and his CKMS Media TV students pocketed four medals of the 30 awards earned by Hawaii schools participating in the Student Television Network Convention which wrapped up March 18 in Nashville.
CKMS media students and Kapaa Middle School were the two middle schools from Kauai participating in STN, being joined by the crew from Kauai High School.
Students from CKMS finished with a first place award in Crazy 8s Broadcast News Magazine, Middle School division, a competition where student teams were given eight hours to assemble a news magazine program on site.
Chiefess Kamakahelei students also earned second place for Spot Feature, Middle School division, third place for Public Service Announcement, Middle School division, and received honorable mention for Anchor Team, Middle School division.
Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School was the only Kauai school to earn awards of the 18 Hawaii schools participating in the conference that attracted 3,000 middle and high school students from across the United States.
All 18 schools participate in the PBS Hawaii’s HIKI NO student news network.
“HIKI NO offers students the ideal preparation for this national competition,” said Leslie Wilcox, PBS Hawaii president and CEO. “The program readies them for different professional paths.”
