LIHUE — Kapaa and Kauai high schools’ varsity baseball teams each won a game in Saturday’s twin bill at Vidinha Stadium.
Kapaa won the opening game 2-0, and Kauai won in the second game, 5-1.
In the second game, Kauai (3-1 KIF) scored two runs in the third inning to lead. With two runners on, Red Raiders senior first baseman Rickey Rego hit an RBI double to left field. Later on, with the bases loaded, senior outfielder Ethan Gray drew a hit-by-pitch to plate the second run.
Kauai scored three more runs in the fourth inning. Red Raiders junior second baseman Tyler Oshima and pinch runner Jaistin Medeiros each scored a run from third base on wild pitches. Senior designated hitter Christian Manera hit a sacrifice fly to right field for another run.
Kapaa (1-1 KIF) got its lone run in the third inning. Warriors sophomore shortstop Noa Cardinez hit an RBI double to left-center to bring home courtesy runner Caden Shimabukuro from first base, who got on base on a walk.
Kauai totaled five runs on four hits and left nine runners on base. Senior catcher Skyler Sadora was 2-3 batting with two singles and one hit-by-pitch.
Red Raiders relief pitcher Jaden Domingsil was the winning pitcher after relieving starter Dahlus Hood in the third inning. In 4 2/3 innings, Domingsil had four strikeouts and gave up three hits and a walk.
In Saturday’s second game, Red Raiders junior shortstop Jacob Borrero was ejected in the fourth inning for what appeared to be unsportsmanlike behavior after drawing a hit-by-pitch.
Kapaa totaled one run on seven hits, left six runners on base and recorded one error. Cardinez was 2-4 with a double, a single and one RBI.
Warriors starting pitcher Ka‘eo Kamau took the loss for Kapaa. In the first three innings, Kamau had four strikeouts, gave up two hits, four walks and hit two batters.
In the first game, Cardinez threw a complete game shutout in the 2-0 win. Cardinez had one strikeout and gave up four hits and three walks.
Kapaa got its two runs in the second inning, on Kupihea’s two-RBI triple.
Kapaa totaled two runs on nine hits and left six runners on base. Kauai left five runners on base.
Kauai will host Waimea (1-1 KIF) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Vidinha Stadium.
Kapaa will play Waimea for a doubleheader Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium. The first game is scheduled for 10 a.m.
