LIHUE — Elle Braun may not have been aware of the good luck symbolism Wednesday as she toyed with the red ribbon crossing the doorway of Studio Barre &Soul, Kauai on Rice Street.
The tangerine — which the youngster started peeling after the ribbon wouldn’t budge — symbolizes longevity in the Chinese New Year celebration, and red is the lucky color for the Chinese.
Elle, with the rest of her family, including James Braun, Anna Balazar and brother Elijah, celebrated the opening of Studio Barre &Soul, Kauai on Rice Street during the Kauai Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting at the site adjacent to the Kauai Economic Development Board.
“Anna’s not just a small business owner,” said Mark Perriello, president of the Kauai Chamber. “She brings a new business that is geared to the revitalization of Rice Street.”
Studio Barre &Soul, Kauai is a boutique fitness studio offering traditional Lotte Berk-inspired BARRE classes, an invigorating one-hour workout that has its roots based on ballet and has been toning and shaping bodies for more than 50 years.
“This is good for me,” said Carrice Gardner of the governor’s office.
“I don’t have time to do workouts because I go from work to my baby. This is close so I might have to check this out.”
The Rice Street location that was blessed by Rev. Sarah Jones during the ceremony is the second location, joining the studio on the south end of downtown Kapaa.
“I’m excited about meeting a whole new community,” Balazar said. “We’re working to create a community of women, and men, through the studio that offers a warm and friendly, non-competitive atmosphere where people come together.”
