KAPAIA — Seniors in Kauai’s high schools who demonstrate qualities passed on from Hawaii’s sugar plantation era laborers may be eligible for a $1,000 scholarship being presented by the Kapaia Foundation, said Laraine Moriguchi of the Foundation.
These qualities include hard work, perseverance, and a positive attitude which was demonstrated by Geneva Dela Cruz, a Kauai High School senior who received the scholarship in 2017.
Scholarship applications are available from each of the high school’s senior class counselor, or by calling 639-3606. There is a deadline of March 26 for submitting completed application forms.
The Kapaia Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve and promote the rich history of Kapaia Valley. During the days when sugar reigned, some 600 people lived in Kapaia with many of the residents working for Lihue Plantation Co.
