LIHUE — Aaliyah Nero’s dedication to helping kids and young adults in need has earned the sixth-grader a national award.
The Daily Point of Light Award is bestowed daily on weekdays in the United States and the United Kingdom on individuals who create meaningful change in their communities.
“The Daily Points of Light award recognizes exceptional individuals who are using their time, talent, voice and treasure to improve the lives of others,” said Jaqueline Innocent, vice president of Recognition Programs of Points of Light.
She continued: “These points of light, like Aaliyah Nero, make an impact on individuals while also helping build resilient communities.”
Nero is the founder of Keala’s Big Sister Club, a non-profit organization that focuses on helping kids in need, mainly by collecting and distributing gift cards.
“It feels good to help others in need,” Nero said. “It makes the world a better place to live in.”
The Daily Point of Light Awards were started in America by President George H.W. Bush, who instituted a daily presidential recognition program from the White House.
Throughout his presidency, Bush bestowed 1,020 Daily Point of Light Awards on citizens and organizations making a difference in other people’s lives and solving community problems.
The 5,000th award was presented at the White House with Bush co-presenting with President Barack Obama.
Nero is encouraging kids who want to volunteer to jump on board with Keala’s Big Sister Club.
Kids who want to volunteer can do so for free, and information is available on the Keala’s Big Sister Club Facebook page.
“Let’s lead and help our community together,” Nero said.
