Grocery store lines maddening
I’m beyond frustrated by the consistent lack of lanes open and resulting long lines at Safeway Lihue. I am asking all who feel the same way to respond to this letter to the editor and reach out directly to Safeway corporate demanding the addition of self-checkout lanes like the Kapaa location has had for years.
Since a few months after the store originally opened, it is not uncommon to have only between two and four of the 13 potential lanes open, with between five and 20 people in each line, while the signage proudly states that Safeway will open more lanes if more than three people are waiting. That rarely occurs and, if it does, it isn’t enough to make a dent in the wait times.
The company clearly is making money from the residents and tourists of Kauai, and I would imagine this location has the highest revenue of any of the grocery stores on the island, perhaps save Costco.
I have complained dozens of time to store management and directly to corporate via email and social media. There’s always an apology and a promise to address the issue, and nothing ever changes.
I am very fond of all the checkout personnel. They are hard workers, and this is not a comment on their efficiency. There’s of course the possibility that Safeway is seeking to hire additional checkers and has been unable to find the workforce. With Kauai’s unemployment at 2 percent, this isn’t a viable solution if it is the one they are trying. The addition of self-checkout is the only solution.

Jason, you wait 3 times as long, pay 3 times as much, receive 1/3 the quality and service. Be 3 times grateful you live where you do.
Mr. Blake… Get use to it. All of our stores are crowded. If you don’t like it try another store. Try the little mom and pop stores that are left if you can afford it. Otherwise stock up for a monthly supply. Your rage on this is going to get worse when the airlines increase the amount of flights coming to Kauai starting in the spring. Sorry to hear about your problem.I promise it’s not going to get any better. And when it comes to hiring more checkers who are paid a better than average wage, good luck, because our government pays people more to sit on their okole’s rather than getting a real job!
Mr. Somit…. My grandson plays pop Warner football. He is smaller than the average 11 year old, but holds his own because of his dad teaching him ju-jitsu since he was a toddler. The bigger kids that know him know what he is about. It’s fun watching him play and drop kids half again his size. he is proud of the dedication he shows his team mates. In my own mind I hope he never gets serious about being a possible player inthe NFL. It’s a whole different ball game as it has shown. I don’t think there is enough input at his age group to the safety of what can take place in the future if he so chooses to move on as a professional player.
You should check out the recent study, which was aimed at trying to see what danger exists in the pre-professional level, that is, where the hits aren’t hard enough to cause concussions.
In response to the Grocery Store Lines letter…. Have you actually been to any other stores in the area? K-Mart being the worst at pretty much any time of day, Times is also horrible right after work and Safeway is pretty much the same as Times. Safeway is usually on it and does make attempts to open lines if someone calls it over the intercom, although at times slow in the process. Possibly if they established more checkers automatically between the hours of 4-6pm the problem would lessen, but the same could be said about any other store in the area. Longs included.
What is really maddening is that this place, as we knew it, died! Never going to be like it was! Canefires, kanikapila, no traffic lights to GMO PMRF missiles, and nowhere to go should vandenburg air force base sends an intercept that takes us out, then blame it on North Korea! I wish i could grumble about long lines in a store, when every day you dont know if you are going to die via ballistic U.S. missiles
Jason, I agree with you. I’ve had the same experience, and yes, it is frustrating. I keep returning for the 50% off stuff though. Kapahulu store has the self-serve. Very nice. Maybe a good idea for Puhi.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. I have to stand in a long line at Safeway. it’s always the ones that just moved here that complain the most about everything. It’s too crowded ??? PRETTY IRONIC. As you’re the one making it too crowded. And you’re probably thinking “how do you know I just moved here?” Because”we” don’t really complain about too much especially a line at Safeway. WAAAAAAAAH
Over dramatic much, Debra? As usual… Sheesh, one false missile warning and you now fear daily that this will be the end? Maybe a visit to a therapists office might do you some good? Sure, that was a scary half hour, but it’s over. And if you live your life in fear and hate daily it’s going to eat you up. So what if an actual missile comes? That was a great lesson that you can do absolutely NOTHING productive in 15 minutes. So you might as well get off your phones and enjoy those last few minutes with the people around you. And if tomorrow does come, be happy and live. Smile Debra, it might just do you some good.
