Post office decision over and done with
Mr. Tolbe, too bad you’re a day late and a dollar short, as they say. Your plight and all the coconuts that were sent to California are unable to save the Lihue post office.
The USPS doesn’t have the funds to keep the Rice Street location “operable,” as you put it. That’s why it’s been identified to be shut down and services will be relocated to the Kapule Highway location.
Let’s accept it and move on.

Don’t legalize recreational marijuana
A recent, very short article in TGI titled High on the highway was excellent, and it is too bad that it was not on the front page.
The article stated that “Traffic deaths in Colorado involving drivers who tested positive for marijuana MORE THAN DOUBLED from 2013 to 2016, a study found. The study also noted a 35 percent increase in emergency-room visits related to marijuana. Stores in Colorado began selling recreational cannabis in 2014.”
Marijuana is a mind-altering drug and, as the statistics prove, a very dangerous one, as are all drugs. It is also a gateway drug, and though the feds list it as being a criminal possession (crime), the states are insanely legalizing it and, for what, for the almighty dollar! Municipalities see this drug as lost revenue from illegal users but close their eyes to the added costs it will bring from deaths and all other tragedies that drugs bring.
Don’t we already have enough issues with alcohol, cocaine, ice, opioids and all new drugs coming forth by adding another level of problems to the equation?
Don’t our police officers have their hands full enough now trying to stop possession of drugs and drug-related crimes without adding another level of headaches to their duties?
And, even more importantly, we are spending millions of dollars a year to educate our young people to leave drugs alone. By more and more states legalizing the recreational use of marijuana aren’t we just wasting our efforts and money by hypocritically countering this message?
If cannabis has positive medical uses then let the AMA (American Medical Association) and the doctors be the judges of that and let them give prescriptions to be filled at pharmacies like all other medications.
But there is something totally wrong with a system where a drug is listed as being illegal by the feds but legal by state law. Hopefully Hawaii will never make marijuana or any other drug legal for recreational use.

Didn’t Kauai have the distinction of one of its own doctors abusing prescription rights and addicting innocent medical believers; resulting in the imprisonment of that doctor? Yes…! But his name escapes me.
The last thing the medical business needs is more drugs to prescribe, haven’t they got enough already…?

That was Dr. Harold Spear and he was far from an over prescriber. Ask any other doctors on the island and they will all tell you they still prescribe more than he ever did. It’s all about small town grudges and overzealous prosecutors. Don’t blame the poor billion dollar drug companies, we all know glen wouldn’t. Writing him in for mayor!!!

Mr. Mickens…. Times have changed. You Need to do better research. Even Mr. Hooser has urged citizens to write our legislators in support of recreational Marijuana. Stop trying to save people from themselves, our government does a good enough job. Get on the wagon to stop alcohol it does far more damage to society. I call it societies best population controler. Read the stats on how many people are killed everyday because of it. You will be quite surprised by the research being conducted on marijuana and what pharmaceuticals companies are coming up with. And while we are at it let’s get rid of the poisoning seed companies on our west side and cover the land with Hemp instead. Good for the economy and doesn’t pollute the environment.
