Drowning victim identified

HANAKAPIAI — Kauai police have identified 57-year-old Timothy Axtelle of Washington State, as Tuesday’s drowning victim.

According to the County of Kauai, firefighters received a call about a swimmer in distress off of Hanakapiai Beach shortly after noon. Rescue 3, aboard Air 1, located the unresponsive man in rough surf about a quarter mile offshore.

Rescuers recovered the man and flew him to a landing zone at Ke’e Beach, but he could not be revived. He was then transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy is pending, however, foul play is not suspected in the cause of his death.

Volunteers with Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, assisted the man’s family.

This is Kauai’s first drowning of 2018.
