HANAPEPE — The Kapaa High School junior varsity soccer teams overcame Saturday’s morning events to sweep the Waimea teams at Hanapepe Stadium.
“We had to start late due to the non-arrival of Kapaa players due to the traffic accident in Wailua,” said Paul Curtis, one of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation game officials. “The game started at 11 a.m. instead of the scheduled 10 a.m. start time, and when the game proceeded, Kapaa had only seven players available, the minimum number required to start a match.”
The girls game proceeded with seven-on-seven with shortened halves, play going to 25-minute halves to accommodate all of the day’s games.
Kapaa girls finished with a 6-0 win over Waimea, and the Kapaa JV boys ended with a 3-0 win over the Menehune behind a hat trick scored by Kellen O’Rourke.
Kapaa girls grew a 3-0 halftime lead to its 6-0 final behind two goals each from Ashley Contrades, scoring in the 29th and 48th minutes, and Naomi Noguchi, who opened the scorebooks on a free kick and graced the Warriors’ 3-0 lead at the break with a goal in the 18th minute. Kamrynn Inouye found the net in the 23rd minute for the Kapaa 3-0 bulge at the break.
Contrades led the second half attack with her pair of goals and got help from Sharya Refamonte, who found the net in the 49th minute.
With the sweep, the Kapaa junior varsity teams next host Kauai High School Thursday at Vidinha Stadium, with the girls match starting at 5 p.m., followed by the boys’ game at 6:45 p.m.
