125th anniversary marks overthrow
HONOLULU — A series of workshops will be held around Oahu over the next week to teach songs that will be sung at the Jan. 17 event observing the 125th anniversary of the illegal overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii, according to a press release from the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
The ʻOnipaʻa Kakou observance will include protocol at Mauna Ala; a march from the Royal Mausoleum to the Kamehameha Statue at Aliʻiolani Hale; the raising of the Hawaiian flag at ʻIolani Palace; and ceremonial offerings at the statue of Queen Liliʻuokalani.
The anniversary of the overthrow coincides with the opening of the 2018 legislative session, and will include speeches from Native Hawaiian leaders at the Capitol Rotunda.
Kumu Hina Wong will lead the I Mana Ka Lahui Mele Workshops, which are being hosted by OHA and are free and open to the public. The workshops will review the ʻOnipaʻa Kakou songs, explain how to sing them and discuss their kaona, or hidden meanings.
Is it ironic that the Kamehameha statue was originally placed at Hanalei, Kauai, but taken away to its current location because of protests from descendents that were never defeated by a low ranking Ali’i? Yet these same ones try to gather the “mana” of the same low rankings deceased in order to restore soverignty are looking to the wrong sources that still remain on Kauai. It was and still is the only place were resolution will be forthcoming since the greatest mana resides on this island.
Yeah, I read the book. Many of it out on shelves at B & N book store. So who was he? David Kalakaua? And why him to reunite a lost kingdom? Beer belly died of some disease in San Francisco. Probably cancer.
I’m not with politics. You know, high school sports, uh football, and mayor. I’m with that businessmen in town who never met that man David Ige or that guy Caldwell.

Kamehameha never conquered Kauai so his statue shouldn’t have been on Kauai in the first place, so Legally kauai shouldn’t even be apart of the 50th state, its should be it’s own, just like all the other Polynesian islands, Samoa, New Zealand, selling all our land to rich foreigners so they get richer and the locals get stripped for everything they work hard for. The system is corrupted, someone’s gotta change it
