KEALIA — It was a metal buoy, not an unexploded bomb, that has been rolling around at Kealia Beach over the last three days.
“We are glad to support the community and are pleased to know that the object was nothing more than a metal buoy,” said Pacific Missile Range Facility Executive Officer Commander Daniel Kimberly.
A U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team was dispatched from Oahu to Kauai to respond to the Monday report and started the search when they arrived Tuesday morning. PMRF and other agencies helped.
Due to shifting sand, high surf and difficult tide conditions, recovery efforts were delayed until 8:30 p.m. when low tide and favorable surf conditions appeared. The object, about 3 feet in diameter, was located about 9:30 p.m.
Anyone who finds an object believed to be an ordnance should call 911.
“They should not touch or try to move it,” said Robert Purdy, PMRF spokesman. “They should remain in the vicinity, a safe distance from the object, to assist arriving authorities in locating the item.”
I think I saw this play out on an episode of Gilligan’s Island…..
